    I have the same caribsea life rock, been running 6.5 yrs, still struggling to grow sps and nothing but issues. After following reefbum for a while he appears to have a similar experience like u mentioned. In hindsight i remember these dry rocks were heavy and impossible to drill for plugs but i didn't think anything of it at the time. Fast foward 6.5 yrs and my tank is still struggling to grow sps. My last tank w real live rock grew sps to the surface of the water. Been thinking bout swapping these cement blocks out for kp live rocks like what u did. Hope to see an update on how the new live rock works out. Thanks for sharing.

      Sorry to hear the issues you have had. I already had live rock so it's hard to say if these helped any...but you can't have too much good bacteria. I'm still having a bit of an issue with corals, and lost half of them. Not sure why, but it's turning around. I always had good luck with corals but the last couple years, nope. I have a few left that are coming back. I would give kp a try but my best tanks ever were when I went from DRY ROCK on the shelf and just let it turn to live. I had tremendous Coraline algae, sponges, etc.....just by doing that.

      @ROTTERtube 23 дні тому

      @@sukantamondal3110 How long have you been dosing? How many days? It also depends on how many fish you have, what size they are, how much food you're adding to the tank, are you doing water changes? are you changing your filter media out? you have to do all this and stay on top of it. If you have been doing this, you need to find the source of the issue...maybe feed less, but to answer your question, after 2 weeks, if it is not going down....dose more. I don't have a chart. I did it by feel. There were times I was adding half a tablespoon roughly, of sugar, to the sump, per day. I go by sight / feel and when the numbers got down for me, I knew what to do. Then I would dose every 3 days or so.

    Why don't you just carbon dose? If your aim is simply to reduce nitrates/phosphate, I'd recommend you just carbon dose. This is for anyone interested in reading my 2 cents worth. Personally I think the main goal of a refugium is to create a safe heaven to grow life that would otherwise have a hard time surviving in the display. This is aim mainly at growing copepods which is primary done to feed dragonets. The side feature is to grow macro algae which absorbs nitrates/phosphates as it grows. You are required to harvest the macro algae to ensure removal of nitrates. If you don't and the macro algae dies, the nitrate/phosphate will just re enter the water column. On top of that, setting up a refugium for the purpose of nitrate/phosphate removal requires the use of light especially those pink/purple ones targeted at growing macro algae. This frequently leads to lightspill in the sump which creates a serious mess! Not to mention additional electricity cost and heat into the sump. If all you're interested in is removing nitrate/phosphate, I think carbon dosing is far more superior and effective. Mess free as well. Either through liquid, pellets or cubes. Carbon dosing works by feeding a carbon source to the nitrate/phosphate consuming bacteria. A carbon source is fed to these bacteria which encourages them to multiply. They multiply fast consuming the carbon source together with phosphate and nitrate. In the process, they create a nitrate/phosphate rich biomass which floats away and gets removed via protein skimming. When they come to the end of their life, they die and also get removed via protein skimming. Thats why we always see such carbon dosing reactors and whatnot close to the protein skimmer inlet. I use Orca Titanium Cube together with an airpump which has worked very well for me.. ua-cam.com/video/3YsZmUyCE1A/v-deo.html

    if the canister filter needs to be cleaned every few weeks based on your experience, a sump just needs to be cleaned 1-2X per year

      Lots of stuff collects at the bottom of a sump. I already have a thin fine layer of particles.

    Turbo snails about a dozen of them will mow it down but it will take some time probably over a month before its gone. Your options are limited though not having a sump.

    The water changes are feeding the algae outbreak along with the lighting intensity and/or the length of lightning time. Also see if the ambient light from the windows is spurring algae growth. Ease up on water changes and cut the lights down to less then 7-8 hours a day for now. That’s my recipe. Hope it helps

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube Місяць тому

      Thanks for the info. Shades are pulled on the windows, and there isn't much light at all from the sun and none is hitting the tank. It's been at 45 PAR for lighting, about 7 hours a day. What about the water changes? How are they making it worse? I'm exporting the bad stuff. Thanks.

    The only way to keep hair algae at minimum is having it constantly being eaten. As in nature algae is present, they are just kept at bay due to the fish. Do you have herbivore fish that actually eat algae? I have 5 tangs in my 6 foot tank. They constantly pick at it during the day. For snails I personally like truchus because they reproduce. At night they really roam around the rocks. With snails, I do not recommend elevated magnesium 1400+. They become lethargic and die off slowly in high magnesium.

      Yeah, I have tangs. Love tangs. They don't touch it much.

      @@ROTTERtube Yeah, they often don't go after the really long algae. It may require good old toothbrush scrubbing to knock it back and hopefully they'll keep it maintained after that.

    Problem with doing the hydrogen peroxide is all that dead algae releases the nutrients back into the water column feeding new algae, vicious cycle.

    It's simple, my friend algae means an absence of herbivores and you pulling out. Get more urchins in there, long spines do best but suck most. Also add like 90 CUC. And use poly filter to help. Shameless plug. Hit us up for CUC. Aquarium Services LLC in los angeles county.

      @ROTTERtube Місяць тому

      ok thanks! I'll look at you guys. Here's adding to your shameless plug....no risk of ich or marine velvet with the CUC? No offense...just need to ask. I don't like to QT and wait for CUC. I never put anything in my tank without QT and with CUC...especially in this case, I don't want to wait.

    Get a shit ton of turbo snails and ever bigger shit load of smaller ones. You’ll have to manually remove the long stuff but they WILL eat the rest of the stuff your fingers can’t pinch. Then one small water change after you start to see it disappearing
